The Historical Roots Of Graphic Recording and Facilitation

The oldest known drawings are the work of Graphic Facilitators/Recorders. They are many thousands of years old and are to be found in the Ardeche Valley of France. They were not made as works of art to impress or influence the viewer.

Most experts agree that the drawings were made to influence the future. Their makers believed that the act of making graphic representations of successful imagined hunts would provide positive influence for future hunts.

The wall charts produced by Graphic Facilitators/Recorders are the direct descendents of these prehistoric cave paintings. They have much more in common with each other than either has with art or cartooning. Graphic Facilitation /Recording has precisely the same intentions as these earliest drawings. The ability to visualise positive and possible alternative futures and releasing the energy and potential to achieve them.

" As events have accelerated, particulaly in these last thirty years or so, we have begun to realize that we are really able to create much of our own future-that there is a relationship between what we want and what we can do and create. This is the main point about thinking in future tense: a new recognition that we are able to construct a very large part of our own future."

Lawrence L.Lippit,
Preferred Futuring

The power of Graphic Recording/Facilitation is that when a group draws out and agrees on an exciting pictorial representation of their desired future they are more likely to make it happen
